Chapter eleven - Compositing in Cinema 4D

Create real/photograph scene that has 3D model/object within it

I try and to this step by step, and try to make it easy to understand, so here we go I write this making of guide for people that have used the software before but are beginners. I hope you can follow this - (the screen shots are not really helpfully but they can help as a guide.

  • create 2 new material - one with luminescence on and the other with just colour, drop photo in the texture area
  • now create background and place the luminescence material on that
  • match the horizon line with the photo and then create camera and key frame it so you can't lose your original view (make sure your looking through your camera)
  • create a plane call it the floor and match it to your photo, drag and drop coloured material on to it.
  • Then in the bottom right box change UV mapping to Frontal.
  • do the same with the wall
  • Then selected all three planes (floor and walls), right click, cinema 4D tags, compositing
  • in the bottom right box, unchecked cast shadows
  • next create a sky and drag the luminescence material on to it and add, cinema 4D tags, Compositing
  • then unchecked the seen by camera
  • Go to setting and add effect - Global Illuminations
  • create a cube place into the photo
  • Now add lights to where the lights are on the photograph, used the different views
  • Now play around with the light setting in the bottom right corner box by creating shadows and changing the colour until your happy it.

Experimental work

using reflective surface and objects to create patterns in cinema 4D, this is a loop animation.

Below I create a brief making of guide of how I created this -

  • by creating Sphere, making it bigger to fit in the whole screen
  • make it editable and delete just under half of the sphere (have the view looking into the sphere
  • now create a materiel, unchecked everything apart from Reflection
  • add layer - Reflection (Legacy)
  • drag and drop onto your sphere
  • Then I create 3 platonic shapes and 3 coloured materials (red, blue and green)
  • dragged the materials onto the shapes.
  • next to animate, place the 3 platonic's with in your half sphere
  • key frame them at 1 and at the end (mine was frame 90)
  • move you green marker to 20 then move your 3 platonic's then key frame them
  • repeat this til you get to the end of your loop
  • render out

I Hope this have been useful to you and if not ask questions!
I'm still learn the software but I can do the best I can!

Chapter Ten - 10 Character Designs

Research into Character Design

Seeing as my last module was about character design, here is 10 artist's character designs. Which I have written a little bit about and I mean a little tiny bit.... I'm getting year one research write up flashbacks right now... 'Ah does it ever end!'

I feel bad for not giving jurist to these great works of art, but it when ever I have to think about explaining about why I like something my mind goes blank.... I'm getting the flash back feeling. Any who I will keep updating this post every time I get the power to write and explain stuff..... Ah SORRY * Hides in a dark corner*

UPDATE - Well I finally getting around to finishing this see as I been given a hell load more research to do and now I must get it done ^_^;

Jambonbon -  James D Wilson

The picture below was a submission to Pictoplasma's Missing Link Research Project. It was an open-call project in which people were asked to submit their impression of what a Yeti might look like. The character is organic with it soft lines and shapes. I like how texture was created and how relaxed the character looks. I find it interesting that he put branches as ear for his character it help give a more organic feel to his work.

Mark Gmehling

Works with Cinema 4D for around 10 years and specialized in character design, animation and rigging.  His character designs feel like liquid and flow really beautifully into shapes. I love the amount of detail that went into the character and how little colour was used that it piece the piece striking.

An illustration that Lebureau did for the splash page of sound designer David Kamp. In it you can see a sort of alter ego of David, a furry musical beast sitting in a world of his own. I like the freedom of the work and imagination that flows from it.

Diana creates paper sculptures of mainly birds. I like her work because it looks super realistic, like they just fly away, yet it all simple lines and colours.  Also love how the background black and how that seems to make the character pop out even more so that if it was on a white background.

I love how this character made up of shapes, and the simple use of shading using shape gives the character depth and also like that this piece was created on wood.

The Essence of Bunny for Pictoplasma (April 11, 2006, France) A submission for Pictoplasma's call for entries to draw the essence of the bunny. I like the simpleness of the picture and it sharp colours in shades of blue.

Goocreate

I like how colourful the art is and the shine of the character face. I really like the strong colours and contrast of the piece.

I really like how this character draws your eye with it's strong red colour and big shiny teeth. Also that it appears to be growing out from all angles.

A Halloween house treasure map, in Collaboration with Studio Anorak. I really love these shiny character by Flowers and like that that he used flat colour and added depth with white which also makes them look shiny.

Zeutch

Zeutch busy artwork with loads of characters on one piece, I find really interesting to look at, there a lot to look at and I'm always find something new that I missed before. I love black and white and the strong contrast it has in this piece, with it detailed patterns.

Chapter Nine - Reflection and Self Assessments

Module One - Character Design

In this module I had to design a character and create a script to go with said character. I used a mixes of hand drawn and digital skills to create my character. I build up my character by creating a full back story and experimenting with visuals on how my character could look. As a final piece I had to create a character board showing a turn a round of my character, dynamic poses, expression and back story.

The project went okay and i'm happy with the out come above even those it may be a bit simple.

My strengths for this module are -

  • Sticking to my targets and time plan
  • problem solving in this module
My weaknesses for this module are -
  • not developing character to the fullest
  • not experimenting enough in creating my character

Module Two - Alternative Techniques

In this module I had to look at and experiment with alternative techniques for our character that I created in the last module. I made a making of guide to help me remember everything I learnt on this module. Also as part of this module we had to reflection and self-analysis for the last module (character design). I looked at 3D modeling and found many problems some I fixed others I couldn't. I used the software, Cinema 4D.

I'm not very happy with how is module turned out and that I couldn't created a 10 second animation within the time frame.

My strengths for this module are -

  • experimentation with ideas
  • My Organization
My weaknesses for this module are -
  • Spelling and grammar
  • Lack of confidence with my work and my own ability

Oh and targets for next week!

  • Finish storyboard
  • gathering assets for animation
  • Start to draw up the 2D part of my animation

Chapter Eight - Side Experiments

Fallout 4

yes that big distraction but I have managed to pull myself away and used this to help improve one my lacking skills - story board creations

I have begun my short comic of a page... yay to the adventurous!

Thus my progress so far -

There is an inhuman jump at the end.... for I keep forgetting to take screen shots. It's still a work in progress and will post the final page when I finished it. I have used the use of photo bashing to help in creating the backgrounds.

My inspiration for the set up of the page was a website style, for example -

Abide in the Wind is an ongoing fantasy webtoon by Shin Weol. I like this style of comic for it clean cut with it's white background and boxes are used to show the action. It's probably one of the easier styles of creating a comic for me to pick up.
