End of Year Reflective Report

Concrete Experiences

Over this past year I have learnt new IT skills and CAAD skills. Expanded my knowledge of the different types of animation and researched many artists, Animators and Illustrators. Within IT/CAAD I have learnt how to use Adobe Photoshop in a more effective way and now know little more about Adobe Illustrator, Adobe after effect, Adobe Premier pro, Final cut, and Cinema 4D, enough to be able to create an animation or Illustration. I have gained a good foundation of knowledge in animation and different area of animation for example Direct film making, Pixilation, Rotoscoping, Stop Motion, 2D Stop Motion, Mixed Media, 2D Animation and 3D Animation. I have broaden my horizons on the different styles of art by looking at loads of different artist, Animators and Illustrators for example, James Jean (artist/Illustrator), Norman Mclaren (animator), Richard Williams (animator), Andre Bergs (animator) and Amy Sol (artist/Illustrator). These artists that I have looked at over this year have helped shape my own art and help me to shape my own style of drawing. We had visited Museum to get ideas for our projects and were useful for thinking up new ideas. Part of one of our module projects was life drawing, and this I found very helpful in proportions and drawing human body. This is something I’m going the practice in the summer holidays. I have always been interested in 3D and the human anatomy and getting proportions right on my character drawing has been difficult and in this past year I feel improved a lot but it still something I wish to work on through the summer holidays.

Reflective Observations

Looking back over the past year on my strengths and weaknesses and how my final pieces and animation turn out, I feel I have done okay, I not total failed on anything nor have I been outstanding, which I feel I bit sad about. I learnt a lot and I feel it been reflective in my work, for I think my work been well rounded and the quality good. My strengths have been over this past year were project manage, time planning I never been late handing in my modules and they always been as complete as much as I could be done within the time frame. In addition I believe my software skills and that I can learn quickly on how to use software for example, Cinema 4D. My weaknesses over this past year were to begin with was research, showing development and the documentation of that development with link that with research. But as progressed through the year I feel research has now become strength for me. My documentation is my biggest weakness for me because my grammar and spelling are very poor and I’m working on this, on reflection for the future I’m really going to work on vocabulary for the summer. In one area I found to be weak in was storyboards it was my worst module and thinking about angles and the flow of the story. Overall I enjoyed this year and I hope to carry this over what I learnt over to the next year. Doing this course has given more of passion for the subject and I will hopefully make it into a career within the industry.

Abstract Conceptualisation

Forming an idea or ideas, so in the future I will expand my knowledge by looking at tutorials, keeping up to date with my favourite artist, animators and Illustrator while keep an eye out for new ones by using programs like Instagram. Also I like to improve my weaknesses, for example my grammar, spelling and to do self-improvement on my drawing style, in particular body proportions and 3D model creation.  I’m going to keep sketching and writing down ideas, keep a scrap book of media (for example magazines), keep myself in tune with what’s happening today within the animation industry. I would like to collect more books on Illustrators I like, like James Jean new Illustration Book, Fables: The Complete Covers and Rift. I think I need to look at comic/manga to help be in creating storyboards and to watch loads of different types of animations to help me to narrow down which field of animation I want to go into. I like to refresh my English and hopefully improve my grammar, spelling and vocabulary. On the Illustration side I like to work on sketching and black ink/fine liner and may be work on hand drawn animations, I love folklores and myths and may be get chance to work on some Illustrative pieces. A friend showed me Jaw cooper work and really like that style and might try that style of drawing for myself and create stories for with them.

Active Experimentation

This is where I’m writing my targets to do for over the summer holidays. Firstly I like research and practice body proportions then hopefully create a model in cinema 4D and make an advanced rig, so that entail research on rigs and cinema 4D.  Secondly I will keep a record/scrap book of media (for example magazines) and keep writing down my ideas and sketches over the summer holidays. Thirdly I read more comic/manga to help me create storyboards and practise making them. Also to watch loads of animations to help me brakes down my own animation to help improve them. Fourthly I like to work on my writing, grammar, spelling and vocabulary for I like to get one First (over 70%), if I can. Fifthly I like to treat myself to some Sakura Pigma Micron pens, a good mechanical pencil and some good paper and work on hand drawn sketches, which tell story/tale. Finally may be making them into hand drawn animation/flick book.
